Now-a-days soundproofing is an emerging need not only for music auditoriums and other live music venues, but also for offices and private homes. Soundproof insulation is essential to prevent the noise from escaping as well as entering. In domestic and office setups, the surrounding construction work, pollution, even noisy neighbors can add to the daily stress. Places like concert halls have to ensure that the sound, reverberations and echoes do not escape outside. Sound insulating can be done either by reduction of the noise or by absorbing the noise.
Reduction renders the sound less effective and does not completely block the noise. Absorption, on the other hand, alters the sound waves and so the resonance and reverberations are muted. Prominent factors, which make a difference in sound insulation, are the distance between the source and receiver with the help of effective barriers and incorporating dampness to reflect and distort sound waves.
Especially in homes, foam sound insulation is a regularly used means of attenuating sound levels. Most people opt for the user friendly spray foam for wall sound insulation and floor sound insulation. Foam insulation is more expensive than insulating materials like fiberglass and cellulose. However, in apartment homes, space is a major problem and so foam is comparatively popular.

Foam insulation uses molded expanded polystyrene (MEPS), extruded expanded polystyrene (XEPS), polyurethane, polyisocyanurate, or a chemical mixture of similar elements. They are available in a liquid or in a foam board form. They are also used to insulate ceilings, entry and overhead garage doors or even pipes and tanks in the basement. Foam insulation in the wall and floor cavities of concrete constructions is done by injecting or pouring the liquid into pores.
Insulating Concrete Forms are commonly used here. Foam is sensitive to the UV rays. So, the roofs with foam insulation are coated with acrylic, silicone, rubber or tar paint. Foam does not ignite quickly, yet once on fire it burns speedily. As insects tunnel into the foam with ease, foam insulation is generally manufactured with a spray of insecticides. If applied on the interiors of the dwelling rather than the exterior, as it is commonly done, this problem automatically diminishes.
Also, sound deadening insulation, a recent development, refers to the usage of a microphone to pick up the generated sound, analyzing it with a computer and then changing its polarity. This causes the noise to be cancelled because of destructive interference.
