Over the years outdoor umbrellas have often been called by more than one name. During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries an outdoor umbrella was defined as a screen used by women to keep them out of the rain. Or it could be called a parasol, which was an outdoor umbrella used to protect the user from the sun. An umbrella referred to an items that protect from the rain, the difference in these two types of umbrellas is the material they were made from.
Parasols were very seldom waterproof. The idea of the parasol of early times helped develop the idea of outdoor umbrellas that are still used to keep those that hold them out of the sun or rain. The main difference between the modern umbrellas and those from the past is the wide variety of sizes, colors, designs and shapes they now come in. They aren’t just for women to carry around with them anymore.
An outdoor patio umbrella is normally part of a patio table where friends and family can sit around and relax and stay in the shade of the umbrella. There are two different types of outdoor umbrellas bases used today. One type of outdoor umbrella base is light, this base is best used for umbrellas that rest inside the center of table, the table acts as the anchor which keeps the umbrella from tipping or moving around when the winds kick up. The heavier outdoor umbrella bases are designed to be used with the freestanding umbrella. The freestanding umbrella requires a heavier base because it has a longer stand and needs the added weight to keep it stable when the winds blow.
Outdoor umbrella stands act as an end table between two lawn chairs. It holds an umbrella in place providing shade to the two chairs while also allowing items such as cold drinks, books and magazines to be sat on the table to be read. There are also outdoor umbrella lights. These lights hang securely inside the umbrella providing a little extra light when the sun goes down. The outdoor patio umbrellas of today can either be a temporary part of the outdoor furniture umbrella or a more permanent fixture. Outdoor market umbrellas are often made of a material that is resistant to the ultraviolet light from the sun beating down on it. The main use of the umbrella is to shield those using it from the sun and rain, but it is also much more versatile and used in backyards and at the beach.
