Need some new furniture for your bedroom or home office? A chest of drawers is a great way to get organized, and free up some space in your living area at the same time. When it comes to finding the right chests of drawers that fit your style, you can go one of two routes.
You can either buy a set of chest of drawer blueprints, and build your own, or you can try to find chest of drawers for sale in a few different places. If you’re not experienced with tools and woodworking, then there are a couple things you can do to save yourself some money.
First, if you have any antique dealers around you, consider giving them a call to find out if there are any antique chest of drawers available. The antique style will give an incredibly rustic appeal, and unless you have an entirely modern design, will fit just about any type of style or decorations you currently have.
These types of chests are slightly more expensive, so if you are really trying to pinch your pennies, then you could find a basic unfinished pine or oak chests of drawers, that you can finish on your own. Putting the stain onto the furniture will not only save you money, but also help you feel more in tune with the furniture once you have it in place, in your home.
If you intend to build your furniture, though, you are going to have to first figure out what type of wood you want to use. Oak, pine, and mahogany make the best types of wood for chests, because of their natural aromas, and timeless beauty. These types of woods do carry a decent price tag with them, so you are going to want to make sure that you have good tools, and an accurate set of blueprints or plans that you can easily read and comprehend. The old saying, measure twice, cut once, goes a long way towards ensuring that you do not end up buying more wood then what was required.
After you have gotten your blueprints, and determined which type of wood you are going to use during construction, you are going to have to figure out if you have the right tools, and if they are up for the task. You’re going to need the basics, hammers, nails, screws, glue, etc, but when it comes to sanding and shaving, you are going to have to take a few things to heart.
When the blueprints or plans call for a specific grade of sandpaper, make sure you use what they call for. Don’t try to rush the process by purchasing a heavier grade of paper, or you will end up with a subpar chest of drawers.
