How to Use Mosaic Tiles to Create a Backsplash

One of the main focal points of any kitchen is the backsplash. Of course, some homes do not have one but any kitchen can benefit from one. Not only does a backsplash add a nice touch of design to the room but it also helps keep splattered food from seeping down between the counter and the wall.

There are endless options for the type of backsplash one can create, but using mosaic tile to create a backsplash is a popular idea. The glass mosaic tiles are especially nice and available in an array of sizes and colors. You can actually build a backsplash entirely on your own and personalize it however you want. There are only a few steps you need to follow.

First pick out the glass mosaic tiles you like, make sure you have enough of it to cover the area. To create a mosaic tile backsplash you will also need some adhesive to attach the tiles to the wall. You want the tiles to be secure against the wall so they will not fall down. Typically, a backsplash goes against the wall behind the sink in the kitchen but it can be elsewhere. It really depends where you want it and how long you want to have it.

Some people choose to have a smaller backsplash while for others they want it all the way along an entire kitchen wall. It all depends on the look of the room and how much time and effort you are willing to put into this.

Once you have your materials, take a pencil and some paper and draw out a basic sketch for yourself. It is much easier to do it this way than having to keep taking down tile from the wall. That will just end up making a big mess.

Once you have a sketch you like, you can get to work. Apply some adhesive to the wall, a smaller area, and begin placing the tiles on top of it. Take your time and wiggle each tile a bit as you place it on the wall. This helps to press it into the adhesive better and gets a stronger hold.

After the adhesive has had time to dry, you simply go over the entire backsplash area with grout. Make sure you get it all in between the tiles as this gives it the final hold. Use a trowel to scrape off the excess grout. Allow it to dry then go over with a damp sponge to clean everything off. Now you are finished and you have a beautiful backsplash to spice up the room.
