The Convenience of Portable Air Conditioning

Spring and summer months can be extremely uncomfortable in older homes that lack central air conditioning. While many children result to jumping in a lukewarm pool and cooling off in the summer breeze, there are more conventional methods to cooling your home. Portable air conditioning is a solution for homes with no air vents or units and can be moved throughout the home to cool off rooms of small and moderate sizes. While these units will consume energy, more energy efficient units have been developed as an environmentally friendly option to refrigerate all of the popular rooms throughout your home.

Portable air conditioning units differ from window swamp coolers as they have wheels so they are not restricted to one room. These units can be easily transported throughout any home or small office and are available in a variety of capacities from 6,000 to 60,000 BTU which is an 1800 to 18000 watt output. While some of these devices also feature electric resistance heaters, some are strictly evaporative coolers.

Air-cooled portable air conditioners are compressor-based; they suck in air and exchanges heat. These units are also makeshift humidifiers as they dehumidify the air while it is also being cooled. This is a great option for children with allergies or homes that are prone to dust.

There are two types of portable air conditioning unit, the split unit and the hose unit. Because hot air must be vented outside the cooled area, there must be an effective method to do this without simply mixing the hot air with the already cooled air. The venting method on the split system is where the indoor unit is connected to an outdoor unit via piping. The hose system is more typical and uses hoses and a bucket or tray to collect water. When the water is full the unit will simply stop or re-evaporate depending on the model of the hose system.

Portable air conditioning units are not extremely expensive as they have been on the market for several years. They can be purchased at local retail stores or online retailers. In this turbulent economy, it may be easier to find a discounted unit. It is also recommended looking off season such as during the fall and winter for even further discounts. So beat the next heat wave with a quality portable unit that will give you the convenience of cooling every room in your home as and when you need to.
