A Pedestal Sink Is For Every Bathroom

The pedestal sink is a wonderful tribute to bathroom design. These bathroom sinks free up space, and open up small bathrooms. They are unassuming and a nice substitute for a bulky wood vanity. They can also be an artwork of natural stone, porcelain, or glass.

Before going out and picking your favorite Kohler pedestal sink though, (and they have some savvy designs,) take time to evaluate the bathroom space being redesigned.

-Is the pedestal sink replacing valuable cabinet space? If so, decide how that storage space will be reincorporated into the bathroom (shelf units, wall-mounted curios, medicine cabinets, etc.)

-How large is the sink area the pedestal is replacing? If you have been using a vanity with a counter top, that space will be eliminated. Most pedestal sinks have very little flat space for resting multiple bottles of products or make up. On the other hand, this means the bathroom cannot accumulate too much clutter!

-Installing a bathroom pedestal sink is rarely just a clean swap. When the vanity is pulled out, there may be flooring issues to deal with, and often the water valves will have to be adjusted in the wall to fit behind the narrow pedestal.

With these considerations in mind, there are many solutions to overcome these minor issues, and enjoy the beauty of the many available pedestal sinks.

Storage issues can be solved easily by choosing a console table pedestal instead of a pedestal made of a single material. Console tables have the sink of your choice sitting on a stand made of metal or wood, and usually include one or two shelves below the sink. The exposed overflow can be matched to the finish of the sink faucets to eliminate the ugly black plastic overflow drain.

If this is a bathroom remodel, most plumbers will reduce the cost of refitting any hot and cold pipes if they are doing other work on the bathroom as well. To eliminate the cost completely, decorative water hoses may be available, or depending on the look of the bathroom, they may be fine exposed. For someone new to this job, a plumber is recommended.

One of the best uses of small pedestal sinks is in very small bathrooms, where a sink and a toilet just fit. In this case, corner pedestal sinks, often no bigger than a bar sink, can be purchased from companies like Duravit and American Standard. If these are still too large, consider a small wall mounted corner sink. Shop around for sales on pedestals, and know your space requirements before you go.
